The image for Immortality was originally a personal piece I painted years ago. It reflects my own fiery spirit for social change and transformation. When Peter asked to use it for his play Immortality, I was honored. The play Immortality is a fantasia on the future of human kind, and it will rock your paradigm of reality. I highly recommend it!

On the Cover of Isis Scrolls!

I illustrated the cover of Isis Scrolls this month! It gave me an opportunity to pay tribute to The Spirit of Humboldt -- a myth I made up when I arrived on the coast of California... or so I thought it was. Until one day I saw the Spirit of Humboldt dodging in and out of the shadows in the Redwood forest! If you sit still long enough in the Redwood forest, you might catch a glimpse of her too.

Eris takes to the Sidewalk

As a benefit to the Northcoast Children's Services and other local children's programs I volunteered to participate in Pastels on the Plaza for the North Coast Coop - which in turn supports local farmers and sustainable agriculture.

From illustrator to street artist, I delighted in the experience. Then serendipitously, I was fortunate to have a rainbow butterfly emerge in the square next to me. It was an incredible day!

The Key to Mitzer's Magical World is about a young teenage girl who discovers a key to a magical world and embarks on a unique journey that assists her to discover the true magic within herself. It is written by a mother and daughter team who aspire to reach teens with learning disabilities who might feel out-of-place in the world . It is a fun and meaningful book which I encourage everyone to look for on the DogEar Publishing website soon!

Notice the ferns and rich luscious moss? The Cover combines foliage from by current travels in the rain-forest along the Northwest Coast -- which is a mighty magical place if you've ever been there. I had to photoshop out the fairies I caught on film though, as that is another story, which I'm sure I'll tell you about later. :)

Ideas Like Cherries | by Eris Klein

     When I was younger I saw creativity as an infinite ocean residing above my head, where everything imaginable and unimaginable already existed and all I had to do was reach up and bring things down – like a tributary from the sea.
     People often asked how ideas flowed from me so easily, but they didn’t get it – it wasn’t work, it was play! Unlike "work" which requires a strong will and forceful attitude in order to accomplish things, gathering ideas is just the opposite. Instead, it requires letting go of one's ego and relaxing into a greater source of knowledge outside one's own. To do this it may require sitting under a tree all day or lollygagging in a sunbeam – but it is far from being unproductive! On the contrary it is equally valid "work", if not more so. It often times arrives at solutions that are even more ingenious and require less energy than brute force will ever be able to accomplish in it's short-sightedness.
     My musician friend, Jerry Palmer likens his creativity to cherry picking -- where all the cherries are already there on the tree and all he has to do is pick them. When we both shared our experience of the creative process we rejoiced in the similarities and I suggested that we share that experience with others on his next album cover.
     And 9 months later we have: Cherry Picking -- a delicious collection of musical compositions from the Cosmic Cherry Tree inside!

New Art Style for Wings of Love

Like my new art style?! I created it for a new picture book titled Wings of Love, written by Pamela Sachs and illustrated by me, Eris.

Wings of Love is a story of deep contrasts, of dark and light, and what it is to be human. But more importantly, it is a reminder of our true essence and the love that is always there for us -- even though often times we don't see it.

Every page will be fully illustrated in layers of transparent collage, creating depth and translucence -- two qualities I adore! Originally everything is hand painted or drawn using traditional materials, such as paint, pastels, pencil, ink, and even crayons. The one consistency will be my expressive line drawings. Then later I collage it all in Photoshop. When I do I may also choose to add my own photos and decorative elements created in Illustrator. So basically this process uses the full spectrum tools and talents in my craft bag. I love it!

This book is going to be a visual extravanza!!
